THE THANKFUL YOU

READ 1 Thessalonians 5:14-18 NLT

Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. 15 See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people. 16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

OVERVIEW & SETUP

It's so easy to forget just how dependent we are on God. More often than not our basic needs are met. Unlike many people around the world, we don't have to live in fear for our lives just because we're Christians. It's important to develop an attitude of thankfulness in our lives both in the day-to-day and especially when things get tough.

ASK + DISCUSS

What did you thank God for today?

EXPLAIN

Acts 17:28: says “For in Him we live and move and exist.” You are alive today by the power and grace of God. Today you got out of bed, hopefully, took a shower, got dressed for school, probably ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner all because God is taking care of you.

READ JAMES 1:2-4 MSG

"Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way."

ASK + DISCUSS

On a scale of 1-10, how hard is it to be thankful when times are hard? What's an example of when that was difficult?

When we push through and thank Jesus for what we have (especially in the hard times), God uses those moments to strengthen our faith. For reasons we will not always understand, God uses difficult circumstances to make us more like Jesus.

REMEMBER WHAT JESUS DID FOR YOU!

When all else fails, there is always one thing you can thank God for: the sacrifice of Jesus for your sins. You were once God’s enemy, but now you are His friend. You were once destined for eternal death, but now you have eternal life. Even in your hardest moments, you can thank God you don’t have to face them alone.
